Buying a Burano Lace from home

While in Italy I had the pleasure of visiting the Island of Burano, famed for its lace-making.

A quick history lesson on the Burano lace, needle lace. The wives of the fisherman made the lace during the winters.  This lace dates back to the 18th century, while it died out in the early 19th century it was later revived during 1872, as a method to supplement the income of the islander during the winter season.  This knowledge has been passed down by the local women from elder to youth.

This school flourished for almost 100 years, they imitated the Venetian needle lace and copied the Belgian and French styles.  The school even began to incorporate new designs in the 20th century, yet toward the end of the 20th century, the school was forced to close. This was due to an influx and completion from cheaper laces from Asia.

That all being said, when you walk along the colorful waterways and streets of this island you can sense the pride in their tradition. The brightly colored building reflects on the main causeways and byways. As you wander the streets and find yourself in the main market, the store lined up to show their wares.

This is was I have my one regret. I found the most beautiful triangle shawl and did not buy it. I had forgotten that I had opened my credit cards for international use.  And  I also had one more city to visit on my trip and would need the cash on hand. So I left the island without the shawl of my dreams.

This annoyed and frustrated me for about a week. I should have bought it before. I scavenged the internet on how to buy lace from Burano, over 15 sites later and emails were sent out into the void I received two responses one from Creazioni Monica and the other Martina Vidal.

Both sent me lovely pictures of their products.

So if you wish to buy Burano lace this is my method. If you are able to travel there budget about 150 to 200 euros for a handmade, Buaron lace shawl. Enjoy art that might not last into the next generation.

Also, buy the piece when you see it.
